Archie and Lilibet Receive New Titles Under Royal Traditions
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's children, Archie Mountbatten-Windsor and Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, have received new titles under long-held traditions of the royal family.
With King Charles III's ascension to the throne, both Archie and Lilibet found themselves with new titles, His Royal Highness and Her Royal Highness respectively, due to changes in the line of succession.
The titles given to Archie and Lilibet come from a tradition started by George V, which hands the title to the grandchildren of a residing monarch.
However, any sitting monarch may change the guidelines of his predecessor, with King Charles III within his right to change the ruling on the grandchildren receiving royal titles.
In his first address to the nation, King Charles III made reference to the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, expressing his love for the pair, but made no mention of potential title changes for the pair or their children.
He said, “I want to also express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”

Despite being technically eligible for the titles of Prince and Princess, Archie and Lilibet have not yet been given these titles.
An update is pending, as all royal family members move one step up in the line of succession following the Queen's passing.
On the royal website, the titles of other senior royals such as Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge have already changed to reflect their new titles.
William inherits his father's title and becomes Prince of Wales, and Kate is now Princess of Wales accordingly, becoming the first to be known as such after Princess Diana.
But the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's children Archie and Lily remain plain master and miss on the royal website.
A spokesman for the palace said the titles will be updated on the website as and when they receive information.
It has not been confirmed yet by their parents or Buckingham Palace whether the children will use the titles.
The King's spokesman said the monarch had announced William and Kate's titles as the Prince and Princess of Wales, and expressed his love for Harry and Meghan in his address to the nation on Friday.
However, the spokesman also mentioned that while the website was updated for the Waleses, updating love on a website doesn't quite work, so they have not yet done that.
But clearly, King Charles III loves Archie and Lilibet, and they will be working through updating the website as and when they get information.
In 2021, it was suggested that Charles, in a bid to limit the number of key royals, intended, when he became monarch, to prevent Archie from becoming a prince.
Whether Archie and Lily will take the titles of Prince and Princess has not yet been confirmed, and the palace is currently focused on the next 10 days.
Overall, the changes in titles for Archie and Lilibet reflect the long-held traditions of the royal family, and it remains to be seen whether they will use these titles in the future.
