Megan Markle’s Past: The Enigma of Her First Marriage
Megan Markle has been the subject of much scrutiny since she married Prince Harry, but one question that remains unanswered is why she divorced her first husband, Trevor Engelson.
As a Hollywood producer, Engelson played a significant role in Megan's rise to fame.
However, despite every incentive to reveal the reason for their split, he has remained silent until now.
In Finding Freedom, a book about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, authors Omid Scobie and Carol Ann Durand suggest that Trevor was envious and resentful of Megan's success.
The book portrays him as her mentor and soulmate, to whom she had clung as his fortunes rose and hers just bumped along.
Up until then, he was the dominant character, and Megan felt he liked her being dependent on him.

This jealousy hastened the breakdown of their relationship.
According to the book, when Trevor was invited to the 2013 Oscars, he went alone, explaining that he had only one ticket.
That didn't sit well with Megan, who wondered if he didn't want to share the spotlight.
This echoes how Megan and Harry feel they have been treated by the royals and a palace establishment that couldn't cope with their megawatt stardom.
However, Megan's only significant role was on Suits, where she played Rachel Zane, a biracial lawyer with a black father and a white mother.
She also appeared in a couple of Lifetime movies in the lead role.
This is barely an accomplishment in Tinseltown.
Markle also scored several minor speaking parts in big hit movies, which she got because her then-husband, Trevor Engelson, was a producer.
As a Hollywood producer, Trevor had to deal with numerous people.
His then-wife was reportedly constantly upset with him for not agreeing to cast her in his films.
After much thought on the subject, some believe he knew she didn't possess the acting talent for big projects.
Another theory is that he didn't want to favor her over anyone else auditioning.
Or, it could have been a combination of the two.
Let's not forget that Megan only got that speaking role in General Hospital because her dad, who worked as a lighting director, pulled some strings.
She has only ever used the men in her life to get what she wants.
The internship in Argentina only happened because her now-late uncle Mike Markle was a diplomat.
So, was Trevor Engelson eaten up with envy provoked by Megan's success?
Those close to Trevor have a different recollection of events.
Engelson's uncle, Mickey Miles Felton, a lacrosse coach from Arizona, is in regular contact with his nephew.
He suggests that the reasons for the divorce given in the book are an attempt to sanitize the reputation of someone who did something wrong and needs to make themselves look good.
“‘Like everyone else, his nephew was not without faults,' he says, but adds, “‘He is not the kind of person who would be jealous of somebody else's success.
He has made successes out of a lot of people who have worked for him.'”
Mr. Felton added that, as Trevor was in a position to help Megan when she was an unknown actress, he would have done everything he could to further her career.
“‘Wouldn't you want to help people you are totally in love with?'
He was just happy for her success.
Just thrilled.
I'll tell you something, Trevor has excellent self-esteem.
He knows who he is and where he's going, and he's not going to be intimidated by his wife's success.”
Of all the unanswered questions about Megan's past, perhaps the most intriguing is why she divorced her first husband.
While Finding Freedom portrays Trevor as envious and resentful of her success, those close to him suggest otherwise.
The truth may never be known, but what is clear is that Megan has come a long way since then, and her star continues to rise.
As for Trevor, he has moved on and is now happily remarried.
