The only child of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Charlotte is currently addressed as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
However, when Prince William succeeds to the throne, she might receive a new title depending on a variety of variables.
The title of Princess Royal is customarily given to the sovereign's eldest daughter.
Princess Anne received this honorary title in 1987 when she turned 70.
She is the seventh Princess Royal, following Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V. Princess Elizabeth was not referred to as the Princess Royal because her aunt, Princess Mary, held the title at the time.
