Princess Margaret’s Lavish Morning Routine Revealed in New Biography
A new biography of Princess Margaret, the Queen’s sister, has revealed her lavish daily routine from the mid-1950s, which has since become an internet sensation.
The excerpt from Craig Brown’s Mam Darling, 99 Glimpses of Princess Margaret, highlights the princess’s morning routine, which often involved breakfast in bed, a long bath, and a slug of vodka before a splendidly long lunch with her mother.
The biography portrays Princess Margaret as someone who never lived a modest life, often accused of being grander than the Queen and ruder than Prince Philip.
Despite this, her daily routine from 1955, when she was in her mid-20s, has inspired the envy of millions.
According to the biography, Princess Margaret’s day would start at 9 a.m. with breakfast in bed, followed by two further hours in bed listening to the radio and reading the papers.
She would invariably leave them scattered over the floor while chain smoking.
By 11 a.m., it was time to get into the bath drawn for her by her maid.

After an hour of wallowing, it was time to do her hair and put on her makeup at her dressing table, and finally, get dressed.
As one would imagine of a princess, Princess Margaret never wore any of her clothes more than once without having them cleaned.
At 12:30 p.m., she would appear downstairs for a vodka pick-me-up, followed by a four-course lunch with the Queen Mother from 1 p.m.
The lunch was served in an informal manner from silver dishes with half a bottle of wine per person, plus fruit, and a variety of native and continental cheeses.
At the time, she is believed to have lived with the Queen Mother in Clarence House.
