Queen Makes Surprise Appearance at Elizabeth Line Opening
The Queen surprised onlookers by making an unexpected appearance at the official opening of the Elizabeth Line, the London Crossrail project named in her honour.
The monarch arrived at Paddington Station accompanied by her son Prince Edward to mark the completion of the line.
This is the Queen’s third public appearance in just five days, following visits to the Royal Windsor Horse Show on both Friday and Sunday evening.
The Queen was not scheduled to attend the event, but she was keen to be there and felt well enough this morning to make the trip.
On arrival, Her Majesty was welcomed by the Prime Minister, the Mayor of London, the Secretary of State for Transport and the Commissioner for Transport for London.
She and Prince Edward met with staff who have been key to the project, including train drivers, station staff, and apprentices.
Although the 96-year-old monarch rarely carries out public engagements outside of her residence, she was given an Oyster card and shown how to use it on a ticket machine.

She walked slowly through the station concourse using a walking stick, meeting staff and hearing about the design of the new stations and trains.
Dressed in sunshine yellow, the Queen stepped carefully from the transparent lift while holding a walking stick and smiling warmly, unveiling a plaque stating that she had officially opened the Elizabeth Line.
The Queen spent ten minutes in the station before leaving in a lift, escorted by her son.
Edward then returned to the concourse ahead of a return journey on the railway from Paddington to Tottenham Court Road.
Her attendance was not publicly announced in advance, with the head of state facing ongoing mobility problems, but organisers were told there was a possibility she might be able to attend.
The Queen’s outfit was a Stuart Parvin double-wool crepe coat with an A-line silk dress in shades of yellow, royal blue, and turquoise, and a matching hat by Raquel Trevor-Morgan.
She was wearing her Singapore brooch.
Prince Edward was invited to stand in the driver’s cab during the second leg of the journey back to Paddington and chatted with driver Corinne Spinella as the train moved.
Following the Queen’s visit, the Prime Minister expressed gratitude for her attendance, stating: “We are all incredibly touched and moved and grateful to Her Majesty for coming to open the Elizabeth Line today.
It was fantastic to see her.”
A Buckingham Palace spokesperson said, “In a happy development, Her Majesty the Queen is attending today’s event to mark the completion of the Elizabeth Line.
Her Majesty was aware of the engagement, and the organisers were informed of the possibility she may attend.”
The Elizabeth Line is a capacity enhancement rail project designed to create a rail link that connects East and West London.
The opening comes after nearly four years of delays due to the COVID-19 pandemic, planning issues, and overspending.
The line will run through central London, but it will also connect popular commuter towns to the east and west of London.
This news comes after the Queen received a special gift from the President of Azerbaijan yesterday.
The monarch was presented with a rare Karabakh horse in the courtyard of Windsor Castle.
The Queen, who has a lifelong love of horses, said it was a very kind, very generous gesture.
The Karabakh horse is native to Azerbaijan and is used for endurance events and races.
Equestrians from Azerbaijan have been in Windsor taking part in the recent Windsor Royal Horse Show, which is one of the Queen’s favourite events.
The annual show is the UK’s largest outdoor horse show with international competitions in three different equestrian disciplines.
On the final day of the event, the horse show staged the Platinum Jubilee celebration event – a gallop through time – which featured Azerbaijan performers.
The event, which was broadcast nationwide, featured a host of well-known faces, including actor Tom Cruise and Helen Mirren, and offered guests numerous musical and acting performances.
In addition, horses and riders took to the arena to entertain the crowd, with performers from Azerbaijan among the 1,300 taking part.
In conclusion, the Queen’s surprise appearance at the official opening of the Elizabeth Line was a delightful moment for those in attendance.
Her Majesty’s love of horses was also on display as she received a rare Karabakh horse from the President of Azerbaijan.
These events show that even at 96 years old, the Queen remains an active and beloved member of the royal family.
