Sophie, Countess of Wessex Expected to Become Duchess of Edinburgh

The death of Queen Elizabeth II has brought about a wave of changes in the royal family.

One of these changes is expected to be the promotion of Sophie, Countess of Wessex, to the position of Duchess of Edinburgh.

Sophie, who is married to Prince Edward, the Queen's youngest son, is believed to have had a close relationship with her late mother-in-law, even referring to her as “Mama.”

Following the Queen's passing, the Countess has been seen looking somber and tearful as she attended several memorial services for the Queen.

It is now thought that Edward may inherit his late father Prince Philip's former title of Duke of Edinburgh in light of his mother's death, which would make Sophie a duchess.

The decision rests in the hands of the new King, Charles III.

Prince Philip is said to have expressed his wishes for Edward to inherit his title, and King Charles III agreed to such terms.

As it stands, Edward is the only one of the Queen's sons without a dukedom.

While it is believed that Charles will keep his promise to his late father, Edward has previously expressed doubts.

He stated that it was fine in theory, but it will depend on whether or not the Prince of Wales will do that when he becomes King.

Edward and Sophie have been seen attending several of the Queen's memorial services, including one where Sophie was spotted comforting her sister-in-law, Princess Annette.

The tender moment happened as the family watched the Queen's coffin being carried into the Palace of Hollerood House in Edinburgh on Sunday.

The Queen's children and their spouses watched on in solemn silence as soldiers from the Royal Regiment of Scotland carried the coffin to the Palace's throne room.

The Queen's coffin has since been brought to Buckingham Palace, where several senior royals were waiting for her inside.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex joined King Charles III, the Prince and Princess of Wales, Queen Consort , Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Sir Tim Lawrence, and Sophie Wessex.

and Edomopeli Motsi, and Jack Brooksbank, as well as Zara Phillips and Mike Tindall, also accompanied their family at the Palace.

has become King Charles III, while his wife, , is now the Queen Consort.

and are now the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, with the possibility of becoming the Prince and Princess of Wales later on.

Even three-year-old and one-year-old Lilibet, Prince Harry and 's children, have become a Prince and Princess with the ascension of their grandfather to the throne.

As for Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, they are unlikely to receive any new titles.

The couple stepped back as senior members of the royal family in early 2020.

Although they still retain their Duke and Duchess title, Harry and Meghan no longer use their HRH designations.

However, it is still possible that King Charles may revoke the newfound titles from his grandchildren.

In an interview with Oprah Winfrey last year, Meghan revealed that the royal family discussed changing the rules to prevent from acquiring the princely title.

She also said that, while she was pregnant with Archie, the family decided not to grant him the HRH and Prince title, citing concerns over how dark the baby's skin would be.

It is also possible that Harry and Meghan may opt out of granting the new titles to Archie and Lilibet.

Other royals, like Princess Anne and Prince Edward, have previously decided not to give titles to their own children.

With all the changes happening in the royal family, it will be interesting to see how everything plays out and what new titles will be bestowed upon its members.
