Majority of Canadians now want Monarchy ABOLISHED
The urge of Canadians to abolish the monarchy has reached a “historic high”
According to a recent poll, Canadians' willingness to abolish the monarchy is at the peak in the last 12 years.
When it comes to Canada's constitution, 45 percent of Canadians polled say they would like to see an elected head of state rather than the Queen.
Research Co. reported in a press release released Monday that this choice is at a “record peak,” up 13 points from a previous survey commissioned by the company in February 2020.
Only one in every four Canadians (24%) would like to see Canada stay a monarchy, although 19% claimed they “don't care any way” and 13% were unsure.
“Support for an elected head of state has never exceeded the 40% level across Canada in four previous national surveys undertaken from 2009 to 2020 utilizing this same query,” Mario Canseco, president of Research Co., said in the release.
Trending:
“Men (51%) are more likely to support getting an elected head of state in the region, as are Canadians aged 35 to 54 (46%) and Quebecers (57%) and Liberal Party voters in 2019 (50%),” he said.
Just 22% of those surveyed want Prince Charles, the first in line for the throne, to replace the Queen after she dies or abdicates, while 35% want Prince William to succeed her.
In a survey of Canadians who stated they wanted the monarchy to proceed, 47% said they favoured Prince William to Prince Charles as the next Ruler (39 per cent).
An earlier survey of 2,122 adult Canadians conducted from February 5 to 7 showed that 46% of respondents think the monarchy is obsolete and that Canada should eliminate it, but the figures are marginally higher now that Harry and Meghan have been interviewed.
In a new survey, Canadians were torn about whether or not the monarchy should be replaced, and with what.
Thirty-six percent of respondents said the prime minister should be the head of state, with no other delegate such as the governor general. Sixteen percent said they want Canada to be a republic with an elected ruler, while twenty percent said they want to leave things like they are.
CANADIAN POLL: The majority of Canadians (58%) believe Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, was treated unfairly by the Royal Family because of her race.
Following Oprah Winfrey's dramatic interview with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, Harry and Meghan, a recent Ipsos survey commissioned on behalf of Global News has shown that a lot of Canadians (58%) believe the royal family has handled Meghan poorly because of her ethnicity (18% strongly/40 percent somewhat). Women (62%) are more inclined than men (54%) to say this, as are those aged 18-34 (66%) relative to Canadians aged 35-54 (57%) and 55+ (57%) respectively (54 percent ).
Two-thirds of Canadians (66%) believe that the Queen and royal family should not have any official position in Canadian society since they are merely icons and nothing more, up four points from last year and six points since 2016.
Furthermore, six out of ten (59%) believe (26 percent strongly/33 percent somewhat) that when Queen Elizabeth's reign finishes, Canada should break its institutional relations to the British monarchy, notwithstanding the fact that this opinion has stayed stagnant (down 1 point) since Julie Payette's resignation as Governor General of Canada last month. Similarly, the new interview has not shattered popular confidence in the Queen, with eight out of ten (79%) believing (28 percent strongly/51 percent somewhat) that she has performed admirably in her capacity as ruler, statistically unchanged (down 2 points) from a year earlier.
