What happens during the UK’s period of mourning?
Since 1947, Prince Philip had been married to Queen Elizabeth II. In November 2020, the couple shared their 72nd wedding anniversary. Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward were the royal couple's four children.
Following the prince's passing, the queen has issued a heartfelt statement.
“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh,” according to a statement from Buckingham Palace.
The UK is in eight days of national mourning for Prince Philip, with all government buildings flying Union flags at half mast until 8 a.m. on Sunday.
