Sarah Ferguson Describes Her Complicated Relationship with Prince Philip
Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, recently spoke about her relationship with the late Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, in an appearance on Alan Carr's Life's a Beach podcast.
Despite describing him as “terrifying,” Sarah also acknowledged that he was a wise man.
She recounted how Philip would often respond to her with frustration when she asked him seemingly simple questions.
For example, when she asked if he had gone driving that day, he responded with, “Why are you asking me that?
I do it every day.
Why are you asking me that?
Trending:
Urgh.
Then you lose your confidence.
Did you go driving today?
Car or horse?
Oh, God.
Sorry.
Yes.”
However, Sarah also shared a piece of advice that Philip had given her, which she found resonant.
He told her, “Remember Sarah, you've got to be electable, but never elected.”
The relationship between Sarah and Philip became strained in 1992 after the publication of intimate photos of her with her financial advisor.
The Duke reportedly stopped speaking to her, and the incident took a significant toll on Sarah's mental health, causing her to feel worthless.
It was years before the ice began to thaw between the two, and Sarah was allowed back into the royal circle with some restrictions.
She was even allowed back into the royal box at Royal Ascot and hosted by the Queen at Balmoral Castle.
However, she was often seen leaving the Scottish residence before the arrival of Prince Philip, indicating that the Duke may not have been on the same page as his wife about Sarah.
Despite the difficulties in her relationship with Philip, Sarah has always spoken warmly of her ex-mother-in-law, Queen Elizabeth II.
In a recent interview with The Telegraph, she spoke of how their relationship had warmed in the Queen's later years.
Sarah said she had always admired and adored her ex-mother-in-law and claimed that the Queen was very relieved that Fergie could help her with Prince Andrew over the past few turmoiled years for the Duke of York.
Asked if the Queen was confident Sarah would be there for Andrew even after her death, the Duchess replied, “She knew, I will always be there, always, because I love her.”
In conclusion, Sarah Ferguson's relationship with Prince Philip was a complicated one.
Despite describing him as terrifying, she also acknowledged his wisdom.
