Will Donald Trump’s Accountants Turn on Him? The Trump Organization is under criminal investigation in New York.

Bloomberg correspondent Tim O’Brien hypothesized on MSNBC last night that the Trump Organization’s lead accountant might turn state’s evidence. The working papers of Allen Weisselberg, the Trump Organization’s chief financial officer, were among the records received by the New York District Attorney’s office on Monday.

Those who confessed in previous bank fraud and insider trading scandals fared the best. The Sarbanes-Oxley Act increased the severity of fines for those found guilty, including felony penalties, which it applies to both private and public corporations. In a court prosecution, “I was merely following the boss’s orders” is not an appropriate argument. If the courts rule that illegal misconduct occurred, Weisselberg, Trump, and his children who work in the company could be held liable. If Trump is found guilty of illegal conduct, he will be barred from standing for public office for a period of time.

Based on the details they collected while doing the audits, Mazers, the French accounting company that manages the Trump Organization’s audits, could face the same risk.

The documents that were subpoenaed, according to O’Brien, include the duration right before Donald Trump ran for president. The details in his taxes could shed light on his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, as well as allegations of oligarch financial funding. More years of records may have been used in the warrant, according to O’Brien.

The IRS provides a three-year term of limitations on identifying errors in tax returns. For theft, there is no statute of limitations. Since the latest investigation is being carried out by the State of New York, it has the potential to reveal far-reaching concerns with far-reaching implications.
