Capitol Police officers sue Donald Trump over January 6 riot

On Tuesday, two Capitol Police officers charged former US President Donald Trump for inciting the January 6 protests, which left scores of officers wounded and one officer dead.

Officers James Blassingame and Sidney Hemby said they were hurt “physically and emotionally” during the violence, which they said was caused by Trump in his final weeks as president, when he was unable to acknowledge his election loss.

“The insurrectionists were spurred on by Trump´s conduct over many months in getting his followers to believe his false allegation that he was about to be forced out of the White House because of massive election fraud,” they wrote in a federal court filing in Washington.

“The insurrectionist mob, which Trump had inflamed, encouraged, incited, directed, and aided and abetted, forced its way over and past the plaintiffs and their fellow officers, pursuing and attacking them.”

Blassingame, a 17-year Capitol police officer, said he suffered bruises to his head and back and remains emotionally affected by the incident.

During the Trump supporters’ assault on Congress, the African-American officer said he was exposed to racial assaults.

After being smashed against Capitol building glass, Hemby, an 11-year officer, suffered hand and knee fractures, and chemical sprays were sprayed in his face and on his body during the assault.

According to the suit, “Officer Hemby usually has a cool attitude but has struggled to contain the emotional fallout from being relentlessly targeted.”

The case mentions several cases in which Trump is alleged to have encouraged the rebellion.

It charges Trump with directing and abetting abuse, battery, and mental harm, as well as causing protests and breaking public safety rules.

The officers requested $75,000 in compensatory damages plus an unspecified sum in punitive damages from the judge.

Wisconsin governor says Trump must compensate for lawsuit alleging haphazard voting.

Wisconsin has requested a court to require Donald Trump to pay $145,000 to compensate the state’s litigation bills in fighting against the former president’s “haphazard” election-fraud case.

Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers said in a complaint Wednesday in federal court in Milwaukee that Trump’s effort to reverse the will of the state’s 3.3 million residents was so feeble and time-consuming that he and his attorneys could all be fined for wasting public money.

In the filing, Evers said, “There is no need for Wisconsin taxpayers to bear the burden of this effort to hijack the democratic process.”
