Prince Harry Faces Backlash After Labeling First Amendment ‘Bonkers’

has come under fire for his recent comments about the First Amendment, which protects freedom of speech in the United States.

The Duke of Sussex, who currently resides in California with his wife , made the remarks during a podcast interview with Dax Shepard on the Armchair Expert show.

Although he admitted to not fully understanding the First Amendment, Harry proceeded to describe it as “bonkers.” He went on to say that he didn't want to delve too deeply into the subject because it was a “huge” topic and he had only been in the country for a short time.

The prince's comments have sparked a wave of criticism from Americans, who are fiercely protective of their right to free speech.

Many social media users expressed their outrage at what they saw as Harry's ignorance and arrogance.

One reader of Express.co.uk commented, “Having successfully offended most of the UK, Harry turns his attention to offending Americans.

Trending:

The arrogance is amazing.” Another wrote, “Show some respect.

He doesn't know what respect is.”

Meghan McCain, daughter of the late US Senator John McCain and co-host of ABC's talkshow The View, tweeted a reminder to Harry of the War of Independence, saying, “We fought a war in 1776 so we don't have to care what you say or think.

That being said, you have chosen to seek refuge from your homeland here and thrive because all of what our country has to offer and one of the biggest things is the First Amendment.

Show some utter respect.”

Commentator Megyn Kelly added her own criticism, quoting the famous adage, “Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”

Ted Cruz, a senator for Texas, was more restrained in his response, simply tweeting, “Nice that he can say that.”

Fox News host Laura Ingraham was less measured, telling Harry, “Don't let the doorknob hit you, Windsor.”

Former Brexit Party leader Nigel Farage, who has been touring the US, warned that Harry's comments showed he had “lost the plot” and would soon be unwanted on both sides of the Atlantic.

The backlash against Harry highlights the sensitivity of the issue of free speech in the US.

The First Amendment is a cornerstone of American democracy and is seen as a fundamental right by many citizens.

While Harry's comments may have been intended to be lighthearted, they have clearly struck a nerve with many Americans.

Some commentators have suggested that the prince should have been more careful in his choice of words, given the potential for offense.
