Catherine wore a caped, white Jenny Packham floor-length evening dress with sparkling detail on the shoulders and her go-to tiara, the Lover's Knot.

The Lover's Knot tiara, a diamond and pearl encrusted headpiece made in 1914, was often worn by her namesake, Diana, Princess of Wales.

It was given to by the Queen as a wedding gift in 1981.

The royal was also seen with the GCVO star and sash, as well as the four-strand pearl bracelet belonging to the late Queen and Diana's diamond and pearl drop earrings.

Other symbolic pieces Catherine wore included the Queen's family order, miniature portraits of the late sovereign set in diamonds on a chartreuse yellow ribbon.

The Queen's family order was given to Catherine by Elizabeth II.

Princess Catherine's decision to wear white to the event was no doubt deliberate and made in tribute to II, who customarily wore white to all official engagements.

Royal expert Gabby Winters told Hello!

Magazine, “White is the colour of peace and the colour of new beginnings.

So coincidentally the psychological meaning behind this uncommon colour choice is very fitting when it comes to renewing and celebrating diplomatic ties between different nations.”

Earlier on in the day, the Princess of Wales wore the Prince of Wales Feather Pendant, a piece often showcased by Diana.

The sparkling diamond pendant, which can be worn as a brooch, is made of 18 round cut diamonds with small emeralds around the three Prince of Wales ostrich feathers, a crown and the motto, “I She DM, I Serve.”

Catherine decided to wear the jewellery with its delectable caboose emerald at the bottom for the first time.

During the official greeting of the South African President, the Princess made an appearance wearing a majestic purple Amelia Wickstead dress and matching Sean Barrett hat.

Princess Alexander of Denmark received the Prince of Wales Feathers Pendant as a wedding gift from the Ladies of North Wales when she wed the Prince of Wales, late King Edward VII in 1863.

When Diana married the Prince of Wales in 1981, it was afterwards given to the Queen Mother and then to Diana.

The design of Catherine's embellished bridal white gown, which is from a past season's collection, even features on the Jenny Packham Bridal Instagram account.

There is no denying the Princess of Wales looked poised and elegant in the dress fitted for a royal bride.
