Prince Philip: Rare Photo of the Duke and Queen Elizabeth II Giggling Goes Viral
The world is still mourning the loss of Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, who passed away on Friday.
As the media continue to share the most memorable moments of the late Duke's life, one particular photo has captured the hearts of many.
The photo shows the royal couple giggling, and it has been widely shared online.
The viral photo is from an event at Windsor Castle in 2003 and shows the Duke of Edinburgh dressed in the Grenadier Guards uniform.
In the photo, the Duke of Edinburgh can be seen standing off to the side of the Queen as she walks by, grinning widely as she giggled.
Her Majesty often keeps most elements of her private life hidden, which is precisely why any displays of emotion are so exciting.
Trending:
Captions on Twitter and Reddit claim the Queen, now 94, was laughing because she'd only just twigged it was her husband sporting the bearskin hat, and some thought he could have even been playing a prank on her by donning the uniform.
But that's not actually the case.
The Duke of Edinburgh was Colonel of the Grenadier Guards at the time, hence the uniform.
Netizens, therefore, have got confused with the traditional bearskin hat, also known as Busby, but the Duke had been photographed wearing this ceremonial uniform on numerous occasions, mostly during the annual Trooping the Colour parades.
While the viral photo is real, Snoop's debunked its backstory, explaining that Philip was not pulling a prank.
According to BBC, a photographer named Chris Young of Press Association was the only photographer at the event who was able to capture the sweet yet humorous moment on camera.
Philip was dressed in full uniform to escort the monarch, unfortunately, the event was interrupted by none other than a swarm of bees.
“I got lucky,” Young told the outlet.
“I recognised that it was a human moment.
She was giggling like a little girl, and he was laughing too.”
He continued, adding, “I thought the reaction from both of them was pretty unique.
Some of the guests were unsure as to whether they should move, but eventually everyone had to beat a retreat.”
Luckily, a royal beekeeper was able to smooth everything over with the bees.
The next day, the candid shots taken by Young made the front page of the newspapers due to the rare, human moment that was captured.
Over the years, the Queen and Prince Philip displayed plenty of moments of pure affection that were captured on film, from their engagement photos to anniversary shots years later.
It's clear this couple remained deeply in love for the duration of their marriage.
In her tribute to her husband this week, the Queen described her beloved husband as her strength and stay throughout her reign.
“He has, quite simply, been my strength and stay all these years, and I, and his whole family, and this and many other countries, owe him a debt greater than he would ever claim, or we shall ever know,” she said.
The Duke of Edinburgh was the longest serving royal consort in British history, performing the role from 1975 until December 2017, when his son Prince Andrew took over.
Even though the giggling photo isn't what everyone thinks it is, it does display the essence of a playful, loving marriage between two famous royals.
