Princess Diana’s Makeup Artist Reveals How She Maintained Her Iconic Look

's beauty look has remained one of the most iconic of our times.

With her quintessentially 80s coiffure and flawlessly natural makeup, she set a standard that remains unmatched.

Now, one of her makeup artists, Mary Greenwell, has opened up about how Diana looked after her looks, and how women today can learn a thing or two from her.

Mary Greenwell, an A-list makeup artist who also works with Uma Thurman and Cate Blanchett, began working with in 1991 for Vogue's December issue, photographed by Patrick the Markler.

From there, the two women forged a close working relationship and Mary helped create the signature beauty look that the world will always remember.

Speaking to Stylus magazine, Mary opened up about the first time she met the princess on the Vogue shoot.

She said, “She was just coming into her own when we first met and had just married .

Her marriage seemed solid, and she was just the most divine, sweet kind lady.

It was a huge privilege to work with our then future queen.

She was so natural and so lovely and so charming.

We had such a lovely day, and it seems the princess wasn't one to shy away from taking risks with her look.”

During the shoot, Diana sat in Sam's chair and let him cut her hair in whichever way he thought would suit her best.

She then sat down in front of Mary, who asked her, “How are you feeling?

What do you want your makeup to be?”

Diana replied, “Whatever you want, just make me look fresh and new, do something different on me.”

That's when Mary started to change her look, and had the privilege and joy to work with her.

The pair had so much fun working together over the years that Princess Diana frequently called Mary to talk about her love of makeup.

Mary said, “She used to call me up and say, ‘Can you come over and see me?'

I remember she called my house one time, and my friend picked up.

When I came back an hour later, she said, ‘Oh my goodness, you've just had a call from Princess Diana.'

She was so touched that she actually spoke to her, but one thing that really stood out for Mary was how humble the princess was.

“It was lovely with Princess Diana because she was so relaxed and easy.

There were the kids running around; it was just a very relaxing time,” Mary added.

“I remember sitting at her table for lunch in Kensington Palace.

It was a table of about twelve of us, and she was so kind.

She would always say, ‘Come and join us for lunch,' whenever I was around her place.

We sat down, and I can't tell you how interesting it was.

When she spoke, it was just jaw-dropping.

She had this wonderful appeal, and everyone loved her.

She was such a good woman.”

Mary told the magazine of how she managed to coax Diana away from using blue eyeliner.

“Anyone with blue eyes should avoid blue eyeliner at all costs,” warns Mary.

Diana was always very open and willing with her style.

“I think as soon as we worked together, she realized the power of hair and makeup, and that is something that should never be underestimated by anyone.

There were no secrets to Diana's beauty.

No crazy formulas or magic ingredients, just good care and attention.”

Mary told how Diana was very sensible when it came to her skin and took good care of her visage by always removing her makeup at the end of the day.

“After I started working with her, Diana did everything in moderation.

She cut back on drinking so her skin was 100%,” Mary said.

She would start with a moisturizer on her skin, followed by a foundation that matched her skin tone exactly.

She would use concealer to lift the eye area and finish the look with a slick of mascara, ensuring to cover the roots of the lashes too, and a light sweep of blusher and lipstick.

The makeup artist believes we should all take a few tips from Diana.
